My love affair with cozy mysteries began in college. I was away from my family for the first time. I was stressed with absolutely no idea what I wanted to do with my life. Cozy mysteries were my escape. Of course, I am always on the lookout for witchy cozies. That led me to Nan Sampson’s Crime and Coffee series.
Over the years, I have read quite a few witchy cozy mysteries; however, most portray witches in a fantastical way. I have found very few cozy series that realistically portray Wiccans and witches. Restless Natives is an exception.
Hereditary Wiccan Ellie Gooden leaves her marketing career in Chicago to start over in the small Wisconsin town of Horizon. Ellie spent months and her inheritance planning her new coffee shop. However when driving into town, she feels a strange presence. Something is amiss in Horizon.
When she arrives at the coffee shop, Ellie is shocked to discover the previous owner stabbed and covered with syrup and feathers. Who murdered Artie Cullen? Will the murderer strike again? Who is vandalizing Ellie’s shop and home? Will she be able to open the coffee shop?
I absolutely love this book! The mystery is interesting and kept me reading. The characters are realistic and loveable.
I love the underlying theme of finding your tribe. After the death of her parents, Ellie’s only remaining family is her best friend Kate. Through the course of the book, Ellie slowly opens herself to making a new circle of friends. This is something that I have struggled with in my own life. It really resonated with me.
I definitely plan to keep reading this series. I hope that there are many more installments.
