I don’t know about you, but I am ready for fall. I cannot wait for cooler weather. The heat here is stifling. Fall is literally going to be a breath of fresh air. Since the new month is only a few days away, here is our September 2019 calendar printable.
September’s Full Moon
September’s full moon is the Harvest Moon. The Harvest Moon is traditionally the full moon closest to Mabon. At this time of year, the farmers are harvesting the last of their crops. The brightness of the full moon provides extra time to harvest, so we call it the Harvest Moon.
September is a bit of a transition month here on the homestead. The summer crops finished a couple weeks ago. The fall crops are still at the beginning of their lifecycle. Right now, only a few flowers are in bloom.
Mabon
Mabon is the Autumnal Equinox. This year, the equinox occurs at 2:50 pm CDT on Monday, September 23rd.
The Autumnal Equinox is unique because it is one of only two days a year when the day and night are equal. Mabon marks the first official day of Fall. From this point forward, the days become shorter while the nights become longer.
As the second harvest festival, Mabon focuses on the harvest of fruits and vegetables. Now is the time to collect seeds for the next planting.
Legend of Mabon
The name Mabon is taken from Welsh mythology. Modron is a Welsh Mother Goddess. When he was three days old Modron’s son, Mabon, was kidnapped. When the knights discovered Mabon was gone, they set out to find him.
The knights asked the wisest animals for help. This led them to the salmon, who was the oldest and wisest animal of them all. The salmon knew where Mabon was being held captive. He took the knights to Mabon. Then, they reunited Mabon with his mother.
Witches’ Thanksgiving
I was taught that Mabon is the Witches’ Thanksgiving. At this time, we give thanks to the God and Goddess for the fruitful harvest. It is a time to gather with friends to celebrate and feast.
This year in particular, I want to focus on celebrating our blessings. Sometimes it is easy to get caught up focusing on what we don’t have. Just like the earth, our lives have seasons. It’s important to celebrate our current season even with its challenges.
