October 3, 2019

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! I love fall. I look forward to it every year. Even though the calendar says October, we are still waiting for autumn weather to arrive here. Hopefully, the temperatures will be below triple digits soon, and the drought will end. It doesn’t feel like Samhain without at least a little crisp autumn air. I am a little late, but here is the free October 2019 calendar printable. I hope that it helps you plan for the holiday.

October 3rd – Roman Festival of Bacchus

Bacchus is the Roman God of wine and fertility. Although Bacchus is primarily associated with parties and intoxication today, he was a God of the harvest. Due to the prevalence of unsafe drinking water in ancient Rome, wine could literally save someone’s life. According to mythology, Bacchus would educate the people about grapes and wine making. I think that it is quite fitting that he is celebrated in the same month as the final harvest festival.

October 12th – Aleister Crowley’s Birthday

Aleister Crowley was extremely influential and controversial figure in the occult movement of the early 1900s. He coined the term magick for his practice. He also founded the religion Thelema. In 1914, he proposed forming a new religion based upon old pagan beliefs. He proposed celebrating the solstices and equinoxes. Crowley’s ideas and writings influenced the creation of Wicca.

“Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law.”

October 13th – Full Moon

October’s full moon is known as the Hunter’s Moon. At this time of year, animals are more active. We live near a wildlife refuge. My daily commute takes me past the outskirts of the refuge. I see families of deer every day. They love to travel and eat at night. Then today, a black bear ran across the road in front of me. I am usually not skittish around animals, but he gave me quite a scare.

Prior to the creation of modern grocery stores and supply chains, this was the time of year to store food for the winter. My Grandmother canned hundreds of jars of food every fall. If she hadn’t, there would have been no food for the winter.

I inherited my Grandmother’s love of canning. October is right in the middle of apple season. More varieties of apples are available now than at any other time in the year. It is the perfect time to can applesauce, apple butter and apple pie filling. When you preserve produce at home, you know exactly what is in your food. Everything that you preserve now will carry your family through the winter.

I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.

October 18th – Nicholas Culpeper’s Birthday

Nicholas Culpeper was one of the first herbalists. He lived from 1616 to 1654. Culpeper dedicated his life to cataloging and studying herbs. He also spent time studying astrology and its influence on herbs. Some of his theories missed the mark, but others laid the foundation for modern herbalism.

In 1652, he published Culpeper’s Complete Herbal. It is still in print today – 367 years later. Culpeper wanted medicine to be more readily available to every day people. He actually wrote in English instead of Latin which was revolutionary for academics at the time. Read more about Nicholas Culpeper.

October 20th – Selena Fox’s Birthday

If someone asked me to make a list of notable and influential Wiccans, Selena Fox would be at the top of the list. She is one of the foremost religious freedom advocates of our time. In 1974, she founded Circle Sanctuary. It is a 200 acre nature preserve and spiritual center. They regularly host full moon circles and events for the Sabbats.

Selena Fox also founded the Lady Liberty League. In 1985, a U.S. Congressman introduced a bill to take tax exempt status away from Wiccan churches. In effect, it would have revoked Wicca’s legal recognition as an established religion. Pagans and Wiccans banded together against the amendment. Thankfully, the bill was defeated. The Lady Liberty League was also instrumental in getting Wiccan, Pagan and Druid symbols as approved options for headstones issued by the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs.

October 31st – Samhain

Modern Halloween’s roots can be traced back to the Celtic holiday Samhain. To the Celts, Samhain marked the end of summer and the harvest. They believed that on October 31st the veil between the living and dead blurred. As a result, they thought it was the perfect time of year for divination.

In the early 1900s, Halloween grew in popularity and prominence. Neighborhoods and communities began to hold annual events. Then, trick or treating came back into fashion. Today, Halloween is a major secular holiday. It is the time of year when interest in Wicca and Paganism peaks.

In the 1990s, I was taught that Samhain is the witch’s new year. I personally never connected with that idea. If any Sabbat represents the beginning of the new year, I feel as though it would be Yule. After all as the Winter Solstice, Yule is the longest night of the year. It marks the turning of the wheel to rebirth and spring.

Samhain is a time to honor your ancestors. Twenty years ago, I associated the term ancestors with those who lived hundreds of years ago. Now, I have a different perspective. At Samhain, I think of my Grandmother who lived through the Great Depression, World War II, Vietnam and so much more. And of my Great Grandmother who died too young due to lack of access to medical care. They were strong women who paved the way for me.

  1. I haven’t even started thinking about how I’m going to celebrate Samhain. I know it’s going to involve trick-or-treating with my daughter somewhere, but I honestly don’t know what else.
